northern style traditional dance

This year is a very special year for Chiangmai. There is not only the annual celebration for the Thai new year which is known worldwide as Songkarn, but this year also marks as the 720th anniversary of Chiangmai city, which was a capital city of The Lanna Kingdom in former time before being part of Thailand.

This Songkarn, the Chiangmai governor invited 720 performers from 25 different districts in Chiangmai to do a traditional Lanna dance, commonly known as Fon Leb which was designed by Princess Dararassami, the royal consort of King Rama V.

The performers who joined included northern Royal Family Members, government officials, and many people who volunteered to dance. People from 7 to 94 years old participated.

Worth mentioning also H.H Maharajkumar Rana Shri Karandeep Singh Sahcr Dholpur the Prince from Rajasthan, India, also honoured the dance to join in.

This ceremony was held on 11th of April 2016 at The Three Kings Monument (King Mengrai, King Ngammaung and King Ramkhamhang the Great who established Chiangmai in April 1296) located in front of old city hall.

What made it even more special to me is that my 62 years old aunty also was involved as one of 720 performers!

She was so proud to be a part of this great ceremony even though she had to come from a far all the way to the city.

as I am real proud of her, my dear Aunty ! Happy Songkarn to you all !
